Additives for Rubber Sealants

Table of Contents

What’s a Rubber Sealant?

A rubber sealant is a type of sealing material made primarily from rubber. It is generally produced by mixing rubber with additives such as softeners, curing agents, reinforcing fillers, and antioxidants. You can enhance the performance of rubber sealants by adding specialized additives. Rubber sealants are widely used in the sealing and bonding of machinery, instruments, building components, and automobile parts to prevent the intrusion of dust, water, and gas into internal mechanisms. This helps achieve purposes such as waterproofing, sealing, sound insulation, insulation, and buffering.

Minor difference between Rubber Sealants and Adhesives

While adhesives are used to create bonds between two different or similar materials, sealants are designed to create an impenetrable barrier to gas or moisture.

Main Types of Rubber Sealants

  • Butyl Rubber Sealant
    • Butyl rubber sealant is made from isobutylene polymer, which is known for forming the strongest bonds. It is typically used for sealing concrete and metal. Butyl sealants offer excellent weather aging resistance, heat resistance, acid and alkaline resistance, and good electrical insulation properties. They are widely used in machinery, glass installation, cable joints, and other construction applications.
  • Silicone Rubber Sealant:
    • Silicone rubber sealant can be used in a wide temperature range (65°C to 250°C). It also has excellent weather aging resistance and electrical insulation properties. This type of sealant is particularly suitable for elastic bonding in applications with strict temperature requirements, such as electronic components, appliances, refrigeration equipment, and automobiles.
  • Polysulfide Sealant:
    • The molecular weight of liquid polysulfide rubber is around 1000-5000 g/mol. It has various end groups (such as hydroxyl, halogen, and amide), which provide minimal molding shrinkage. Polysulfide rubber sealant offers good oil and chemical resistance and soft insulation. It is widely used as a sealing material in civil engineering and the automotive industry. It can also be applied in oil tanks, fuel tanks, and composite glass seals.
  • Chloroprene Rubber Sealant:
    • Chloroprene sealants have strong initial bonding strength and are cost-effective. They are primarily used for sealing wood, aluminum, and plastic but are not suitable for polystyrene foam materials.

Commitment to Quality

We are committed to providing a variety of additive formulas for rubber sealant materials. The thermo-stability, aging resistance, and UV light resistance of rubber sealants can be further enhanced by adding Omnistab additives. This extends the sealant’s service life while maintaining high elasticity.
