Silicone has excellent adhesion and a wide range of applications. Before starting a major project, you may be wondering: Is silicone waterproof?

Yes, silicone sealants are indeed waterproof. They are commonly used in underwater applications, semi-submerged aquatic environments, and other projects exposed to water and the elements. Thanks to their waterproofing properties, they are also ideal for sealing cracks in various exterior surfaces, or for use in kitchens, bathrooms, and around the home.

Most waterproofing processes require the use of some form of silicone sealant, but it’s important to note that their waterproof capabilities are not immediate. Here’s more information on two important questions:


How Long Does Silicone Take to Become Waterproof?

Silicone sealants must fully cure to become waterproof. Keep in mind that drying time is not the same as curing time. A sealant might feel dry to the touch within 30 minutes, but it can take 24 hours to several days to cure completely, depending on the thickness of the application.

Several factors can affect the curing time, including the type of silicone sealant you’re using. The ambient temperature should ideally be between 5°C and 37°C, with humidity levels between 5% and 95%.

Achieving a waterproof seal isn’t difficult, but it does require patience. That patience pays off, though, because proper waterproofing is essential for any project exposed to water and moisture—such as exterior caulking, plumbing, bathroom renovations, and more.

Be sure to avoid exposing the sealant to moisture before the drying period is complete to prevent potential failures.


How Long Does Silicone Waterproofing Last?

Silicone sealants can remain waterproof for up to 20 years, depending on several factors such as temperature, UV exposure, and the chemical composition of the sealant used.

Beyond just being waterproof, silicone also offers many other advantages: flexibility, low toxicity, weather resistance, and chemical resistance. Its elasticity and resilience mean that even after application, the sealant maintains its permeability and allows for some breathability. Lastly, because it’s a synthetic material, silicone degrades much more slowly under various conditions compared to other types of sealants.

All these characteristics make silicone sealants an ideal long-term solution for many applications.
