What is MS Polymer Sealant? A Detailed Introduction

The modified silane polymer sealant (MS Polymer Sealant) is a type of elastic sealant which succeeds both silicone rubber and polyurethane sealants. Its primary ingredient is the MS polymer which acts as the base filler with plasticizes, and other additives working as fillers, thereby modifying it. Sealants based on MS polymers are available in single component or two-component systems and are used widely for construction and interior works for adhesive application, joint filling, sealing, waterproofing and reinforcement.

With more containers being refrigerated along with the expanding use in elevators ms polymer sealed are growing in prominence due to their superior advantages.

The Development History of MS Polymer Sealants

  • In 1979, Kaneka Corporation in Japan successfully developed the organic silicone-modified polyether sealant (also known as end-capped silane polyether sealant) base polymer.

  • In 1980, Kaneka was the first company to produce elastic sealants based on silane-terminated polyether, and began promoting their use in large-scale and high-end architectural projects from 1981.

  • Since 1982, countries including Japan, the US, and many in Europe have actively researched silane-terminated polyether polymers and their elastic sealants and adhesives, which accelerated the growth of MS polymer sealants.

  • In recent years, MS polymer sealants have rapidly gained market share worldwide due to technological advancements and increasing numbers of manufacturers.

Composition of MS Polymer Sealants

MS polymer sealants mainly contain:

  • Silane-terminated polyether (MS prepolymer) as the primary polymer

  • Plasticizers, such as dioctyl phthalate (DOP), dibenzyl phthalate (DCP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which increase flexibility by weakening intermolecular forces

  • Fumed silica (aerosil) as reinforcing filler to improve mechanical properties and rheology (especially in transparent MS sealants)

  • Silane coupling agents that chemically bond sealant to substrates and enhance crosslink density

  • Catalysts (e.g., dibutyl dilaurate) to accelerate curing and ensure storage stability

  • Aging resistance additives to improve UV and weather durability

  • Moisture scavengers like vinyltrimethoxysilane that remove residual moisture for longer shelf life

The MS prepolymer itself has relatively low strength, so fillers are necessary to reinforce the cured sealant. Plasticizers improve flexibility and elongation but must be balanced to avoid migration and negatively impacting mechanical strength.

Why Choose MS Polymer Sealants?

  • Excellent adhesion to diverse materials without primers

  • Strong elasticity that resists cracking from vibration and movement

  • Superior weathering and UV resistance for long-term outdoor use

  • Low VOC, solvent-free, and environmentally friendly

  • Fast curing at room temperature by moisture crosslinking

  • Wide applications across construction, refrigeration vehicles, containers, and elevators

Conclusion

MS Polymer Sealants represent an advanced solution in modern sealing technology, blending the benefits of elasticity, adhesion, and environmental safety. Their evolving formulations and expanding applications continue to drive their popularity across various industries worldwide.
